The one issue of paramount importance you have to keep in mind is:

Preserve your data

Imagine that you return to your home right after the fire department have finished extinguishing a fired that have just burned all your belongings!

Imagine that you return to your home and find that it have been visited by burglars. Your computer is among the missing items!

Imagine you forget your notebook computer on the train!

People who have suffered a major material loss - like loosing everything in a fire - all tell, that the worst losses are of personal belongings: The ashtray from your grandmother, the photo of your mother or the data on your hard disk.

You can try to find a similar ashtray in a second hand shop, and maybe your sister have a copy of that photo of your mother. But nobody can give you the content of your hard disk back.

The programs you have installed can be obtained again, but the letters you wrote are lost!

The cure for this situation is preventive maintenance. You must make backup copies of your vital data on a regular basis.

I use My Own Backup v.2.1 - a simple FreeWare backup program -  which packs selected folders and file from my hard disk to a single zip file. Then I burn these zip files onto a CD-ROM.

I have of course scanned the photo of my mother to a computer file, - so I will only have to miss the ashtray :-)

The backup CD I made yesterday may be lost in the fire, but the one from last week is in my summer cottage because I regularly deposit older backups at other places. So: make backups and spread them a little around.
